Ojén

Ojén’s name has travelled much further than the village. The anise spirit known as aguardiente de Ojén has been distilled here since the 19th century, and it became popular abroad, especially in New Orleans during the Mardi Gras celebrations. The village that gave the drink its name had 4,755 registered residents on 1 January 2025, according to INE, and lies at about 309 metres above sea level in the hills behind Marbella.

For buyers, Ojén offers a traditional village with mountain land on every side, while Marbella and the main coastal services remain within reach by road. This guide covers the village and the wider municipality, which also includes residential areas on its lower, south-eastern edge towards the coast.

Mountains on the doorstep

The municipality covers 85.6 square kilometres of the Sierra Blanca and the Sierra de Canucha, where peaks rise above 1,200 metres. Mediterranean woodland of oak, cork oak and pine covers much of this land. The area is home to the Iberian ibex and to a rare colony of Spanish fir, known locally as pinsapo.

Ojén is one of 12 municipalities in the Sierra de las Nieves Biosphere Reserve, which UNESCO declared in 1995. Walkers can follow stages 31 and 32 of the GR 249 Gran Senda de Málaga, the long-distance path around the province, through the municipality.

Higher in the mountains is Juanar, where the Marquis of Larios built a hunting lodge in 1906. It later became a state-run parador and now operates as a hotel, popular with visitors who come for the mountain air and the views down to Marbella and the coast.

Getting around

Ojén has no railway, and journeys to the coast start by road down towards Marbella and the A-7. Málaga–Costa del Sol Airport (AGP) is about 30 km away. The nearest commuter rail terminus is Fuengirola, where the Cercanías C1 line begins its route to Málaga.

Journeys on mountain roads can take longer than the distance suggests. Before choosing a home, it helps to drive the route to school, work or the airport at the times of day you would normally travel.

The property market

Ojén is a small market, and short-term figures move easily. Municipal statistics include both the village and the residential areas on the lower, south-eastern side of the municipality, so the averages combine very different kinds of home.

• Consejo General del Notariado, homes sold in the latest 12 months published (retrieved August 2026): 167 sales in Ojén, an average of €3,223/m², an average price of €500,008 and an average size of 155 m².
• Ministerio de Vivienda y Agenda Urbana, transaction series built from notarial data, April 2025 to March 2026: 178 homes changed hands in Ojén, 25 of them new builds (14.0%).
• Registradores de España, Estadística Registral Inmobiliaria for Málaga province, April to June 2026: an average of €3,254/m² and an average price of €338,816 across 8,873 registered sales.

Each source looks at a different stage of a sale. Deeds signed before a notary, sales entered in the land register and prices asked on current listings cover different months and different homes, so the figures will not agree with each other.
